Municipal Historic Resource Designations at City Council
On December 20, the following Municipal Historic Resource Designations go to City Council for approval
Athlone Building – 3910 Quesnay Wood Drive (Currie Barracks) Year Built: 1936
The Athlone Building, constructed in 1936, is a large two-storey, hollow clay tile encased steel-frame structure distinguished by its T-shaped plan, symmetrical facades of regularly spaced windows, rough-faced white stucco façade, and wood-shingled hipped roof, with a gabled end at the projecting main entrance. The building features simplified Georgian classical motifs exemplified in its cornice mold and concrete frieze banding, periodic decorative plaques, and prominent projecting centralized entrance with a surround of stone pilasters and Palladian windows. Mature landscaping frames the Athlone Building as it prominently sits along the western edge, and on a centreline axis with the ceremonial entry gates of the historic Parade Square, in the southwest Calgary community of Currie Barracks.

Barron Building - 610 8 AVE SW (Downtown)
Year Built: 1949-51
The Barron Building, constructed 1949-51, is an 11-storey, Art Moderne-style building located in the western section of downtown Calgary. The reinforced-concrete-frame building, distinguished by its stepped massing and restrained detail is clad with buff-coloured brick, Tyndall limestone and polished black granite. A vertically emphasised central bay, ribbon windows, and rooftop penthouse serve to further characterize the building.

Gray Residence - 2222 16 ST SE (Inglewood)
Year Built: 1911
The Gray Residence, constructed 1911, is a one-storey Bungalow with Edwardian cottage-style features, distinguished by a pitched hipped roof with a ridge, integrated front entry shed roof, full-width partially enclosed rear screened porch, and consistently sized original wood windows on all facades. The house is situated along a historic grid-street pattern on a cul-de-sac and adjacent to open space. It is surrounded by mature landscaping; a tall hedge fronts the house on the deep rectangular lot, with narrow front- and side-yard setbacks, and rear lane access to a garage. This house is part of the residential enclave in the southeast community of Inglewood, near the historic Colonel Walker School.

McAdam Residence - 105 Scarboro AV SW (Scarboro) Year Built: 1926
The McAdam Residence, constructed in 1926, is a one- and one-half-storey, Tudor Revival-style home distinguished by a moderately-pitched, cross-gabled roofline with front shed-dormer, and an arched inset front entrance. The house is situated at the end of a curvilinear boulevard street and across the street from the Scarboro United Church and Manse. The McAdam Residence contributes to the “Picturesque suburb” streetscapes within the southwest community of Scarboro.
